Naresh Rathna Kumar : From
Enthusiastic Beginner to UI/UX Achiever
UI/UX and Web Designing internship
( June 2025 )
St. Joseph's College of Engineering

Naresh Rathna Kumar, a dedicated student pursuing B.Tech in Information Technology at St. Joseph's College of Engineering, joined our UI/UX and Web Designing internship with an unyielding thirst for knowledge. Despite having no prior experience in design or front-end development, Naresh's incredible drive and innate curiosity set him apart. He dove headfirst into understanding design thinking, exploring tools like Figma and Adobe Photoshop, and mastering the fundamentals of HTML, CSS, Bootstrap and Javascript. His ability to grasp complex design principles and translate them into aesthetically pleasing and functional interfaces was truly remarkable.
Over the course of his one-month internship, Naresh made impressive strides, building a solid foundation and evolving into a competent UI/UX practitioner. His unwavering dedication, quick adaptability, and consistent, high-quality execution on project tasks earned him the Outstanding Performance Award, making his journey a compelling testament to how genuine passion, combined with focused learning, can rapidly translate into invaluable skill.
The Challenge : Beyond the Blank Canvas
When Naresh began his internship, his primary hurdle was navigating an entirely new creative and technical landscape without any foundational knowledge. Learning intricate concepts like user research, information architecture, and interaction design was a significant undertaking, especially while simultaneously trying to master design tools like Figma and foundational coding languages.
His chosen project, "Designing a Dynamic and User-Centric E-Commerce Platform for Sports Accessories," presented an additional layer of complexity. He needed to balance the visual appeal and branding of sports accessories with the crucial aspects of user-friendliness, seamless navigation, and an efficient purchasing flow. Concepts such as wireframing, prototyping, and responsive web design were unfamiliar but absolutely crucial for success in a real-world e-commerce context.
Despite facing tight deadlines and a steep learning curve, Naresh approached every obstacle with an insatiable learner's mindset, consistently turning challenges into meaningful opportunities for growth throughout the entire process. He didn't just learn to draw boxes; he learned to think about the people who would click them.

Our Approach : Cultivating Curiosity, Building Capability
Recognizing Naresh’s palpable eagerness to learn, we designed a highly structured and supportive environment that gradually introduced him to core UI/UX principles and essential design and development tools. Through step-by-step guidance, hands-on design exercises, and dedicated mentorship sessions, we helped him overcome his initial creative and technical hurdles. He rapidly assimilated fundamental concepts like user flow mapping, visual hierarchy, and basic front-end coding.
Assignments were delivered in incremental stages, allowing him to apply newly acquired skills without feeling overwhelmed. His insightful questions during sessions demonstrated deep engagement, and we meticulously tailored the learning pace to optimize his progress. Consistent encouragement from mentors and exposure to successful projects from past interns provided both inspiration and clarity. Naresh’s consistent improvement served as a strong validation of our mentorship approach, making his journey incredibly rewarding for our team.
We strategically divided his one-month internship into two core phases :
Phase 1 : Accelerated Foundational Training
The internship commenced with intensive training focused on key UI/UX principles, including user research methodologies, journey maps, and visual design fundamentals. Naresh eagerly explored Figma to create initial wireframes and prototypes, and enthusiastically practiced layout structures using HTML and CSS. Bootstrap was introduced to teach him responsive design principles, crucial for modern e-commerce platforms.
Although initially daunted by the sheer volume of new information, he found immense satisfaction in seeing his designs come alive on screen. His commitment to completing practical exercises, attending all sessions, and proactively seeking additional resources demonstrated strong dedication. Within days, he moved from conceptual sketches to interactive digital mock-ups, often refining visual elements using Adobe Photoshop. This phase significantly bolstered his creative confidence and established a robust technical foundation, preparing him to tackle a real-world project in Phase 2.
Phase 2 : Project Development & Mentorship
In this phase, Naresh applied his burgeoning skills to a real-world project : "Designing a Dynamic and User-Centric E-Commerce Platform for Sports Accessories." He began by conducting light user research, identifying key user expectations and potential pain points in existing online sports stores. With consistent mentor support, he meticulously created detailed user flows, low-fidelity wireframes, and then high-fidelity prototypes using Figma. Any necessary image editing or asset preparation was handled using Adobe Photoshop. Using HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, and JavaScript, he developed a responsive front-end layout for the platform, focusing heavily on intuitive navigation, compelling product displays, and a streamlined checkout process. His design included features like product filtering, a visually engaging product detail page, and mobile-first compatibility. Naresh meticulously debugged layout issues independently and enhanced usability with subtle yet effective interactive elements. The final outcome was not just visually engaging and highly functional but also deeply user-centric, brilliantly showcasing his evolution into a confident, user-first designer.
The Outcome : Design Vision Brought to Life
Naresh’s internship journey culminated in a complete and profound transformation. In just one month, he successfully designed and prototyped a responsive e-commerce platform for sports accessories, demonstrating a clear understanding of modern UI/UX principles and front-end development. His project stood as compelling evidence of his ability to merge aesthetic appeal with seamless functionality, despite starting with absolutely no prior experience.
He didn't merely follow instructions; he internalized the logic behind great user experiences and applied it thoughtfully to every design decision. More importantly, Naresh gained immense confidence in his creative abilities and technical problem-solving skills. By the end, he was no longer just a learner; he emerged as a capable, insightful UI/UX designer, ready to explore the dynamic world of digital product design.

Recognizing His Commitment :
A True Example
Naresh’s commitment truly distinguished him. He consistently went above and beyond expectations, submitting extra design explorations, asking profoundly thoughtful questions about user behaviour, and meticulously refining his interfaces. Despite confronting novel tools and demanding schedules, he displayed remarkable self-discipline and an unwavering growth mindset. He actively participated in every session, embracing feedback as a valuable opportunity for improvement rather than as criticism.
His genuine passion for learning and his persistence in overcoming creative and technical challenges inspired both mentors and his peers. In recognition of this extraordinary dedication, we were immensely proud to award him the Outstanding Performance Award, celebrating not just his rapidly acquired skills, but the immense heart and unwavering effort he invested into every single step of his journey.
